Does Our Dialectical Behavior Therapy Practice Accept My Insurance? A Friendly Coffee Chat About DBT Coverage

Two people sit across from each other at a quiet café, steaming mugs in hand.

Prospective Client: Okay, real talk. I’ve been looking into Dialectical Behavior Therapy—DBT—for a while now. The skills sound perfect for me, but the big question is always insurance. Does your practice actually take the major ones?

Coastal DBT: (smiles, stirring their coffee) I get that question every week. Let’s just go through it the way we would if we were sitting here for real. Our DBT practice works with a solid list of plans, and I’ll break it down simply.

Prospective Client: Start with Aetna. I’ve got Aetna through work.

Coastal DBT: Yes—we’re in the Aetna Network. That covers Aetna Direct plans and any third-party administrators that use the Aetna network, like Meritain. So if your card says Aetna or Meritain, you’re usually good. Always worth a quick verification call, but the door is open.

Prospective Client: What about Blue Cross? I’m on a South Carolina Blue Cross plan.

Coastal DBT: Perfect. We accept any Blue Cross policy from South Carolina, plus anything in the Blue Card Network. If it’s a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan that travels under Blue Card, we can work with it. That covers a lot of people in the state.

Prospective Client: Cigna?

Coastal DBT: Cigna is a little more specific. Sarah, one of our clinicians, accepts Cigna through Headway. So if you’re on Cigna and want to work with her, Headway makes that possible. Just let us know and we’ll walk you through it.

Prospective Client: I’m almost on Medicare. Does Dialectical Behavior Therapy get covered there?

Coastal DBT: Yes. We accept both traditional Medicare Fee-for-Service and Medicare Advantage plans. A lot of people are surprised that DBT skills training and individual sessions can be covered under Medicare—it’s one of the more straightforward ones for us.

Prospective Client: UnitedHealthcare? Or anything Optum?

Coastal DBT: We’re in the Optum Network, which means any UnitedHealthcare (UHC) policy or other third-party plans that run through Optum. If your insurance card mentions Optum or UHC, chances are high we can take it.

Prospective Client: Medicaid? I’m on South Carolina Medicaid.

Coastal DBT: We accept South Carolina Medicaid Fee-for-Service, Humana Medicaid, and Healthy Blue Medicaid. Those three work. Just a heads-up—we cannot accept Select Health, Molina, or ATC. So if you’re on one of those three, we’ll need to talk about other options, but for Fee-for-Service, Humana, or Healthy Blue, you’re covered.

Prospective Client: Last one—Tricare. My spouse is military.

Coastal DBT: We’re a Tricare East Certified Provider. That means we’re not fully “in-network” in the traditional sense, but as a certified provider we can still accept Tricare East. A lot of military families use us that way. We’ll help you with the paperwork so it’s as smooth as possible.

Prospective Client: Okay, that actually covers almost everyone I know. So if someone is searching “does DBT therapy accept Aetna” or “Dialectical Behavior Therapy insurance South Carolina,” this is the list?

Coastal DBT: Exactly. We built the practice so people looking for DBT skills, emotion regulation support, or full Dialectical Behavior Therapy programs wouldn’t hit a wall at the insurance question. Of course, every plan has its own deductible and copay details, so the best next step is always a quick benefits check. But the short version is: Aetna (including Meritain), Blue Cross (SC and Blue Card), Cigna via Headway with Sarah, Medicare (Fee-for-Service and Advantage), Optum/UHC, South Carolina Medicaid (Fee-for-Service, Humana, Healthy Blue), and Tricare East as a certified provider.

Prospective Client: That’s clearer than most websites. Pass the cream?

Coastal DBT: (laughs) Already did. And if anyone reading this still has questions about whether their specific Dialectical Behavior Therapy sessions would be covered, just reach out. We’re happy to look at your insurance card over a virtual coffee and figure it out together.
